Apparently incomplete collection of correspondence and papers of William Marshall and of members of his family, together with related papers compiled by David J Mackenzie, Sheriff-substitute of Glasgow.

Scope and Contents

William Marshall, who was factor to the Duke of Gordon, was known in his own day as a Scottish fiddler and composer of strathspeys, and an inventor. The collection contains almost nothing of musical interest, and the largest single part consists of letters and copies of letters of his sons whilst on active service in India and in the Peninsular War, written to him and to other members of the family.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters, orders, reports, and maps relating to Murray’s military career, to his official and diplomatic duties and to his literary activities. It is arranged in nearly chronological order illustrating the various periods of his career.

Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents This collection includes the fair copy (not autograph) of Maitland’s ‘Narrative of the Principal Occurrences on board HMS Bellerophon’, and journals of his naval service in South America, 1819-20, the Mediterranean 1820-1, and 1828-30, and India, 1837-9. It also includes a number of printed books relating to Napoleon, particularly to the time he spent on St Helena. The papers mostly concern Gordon`s command of the 11th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery and include Battery log books, copies of Battery correspondence, a history of the Battery, photograph album, training materials, notes and engagement diaries.

'Man in his muscles', a notebook of anatomical engravings attributed to Robert Elliot Bewick, wood-engraver, Newcastle, with notes on perspective, and the bones of the human skull.

It is possible to date the engravings circa 1824, from an obituary of 'Mr Sharp the Engraver', copied into the notebook, and stated to come from the ‘Tyne Mercury’ for 19th October 1824.
